Blog categories

Learn about DropInBlog categories and how to add them to your blog.

Adding a new category

Click Categories on the navigation menu and select Add category to add a new one.

Or click any existing category’s name to make changes.

If you want to change the order in which the categories appear on your blog, use the up and down arrows on the left to rearrange their order.

When you add a new category to your blog, this is the information you can add to it:

Category fields explained

Title: Enter the name of your category, e.g., “tips” or “product updates.” This will also be used as the SEO Page Title.

Slug: This field will be automatically populated when you enter a category’s name. It will match your category’s name and, if the category name has more than one word, the slug will have hyphens between words instead of spaces. This slug will serve as the URL to your category page.

SEO Title: The title you add here is what will be displayed on the first line of search engine results. If you leave it blank, it will default to your category’s title.

SEO Description: This field acts as the category meta description in search results and should be used to provide a brief explanation of what your category is about. The image below shows the SEO title (1) and description (2) of our Tips category in search results.

Private Category: This is the strictest option, and the quickest way to keep a category and its posts out of both your blog and search results. A private category is hidden from your blog’s category menu, its posts are kept off your blog’s homepage, and the category page itself gets a “noindex” meta tag.

Posts assigned only to private categories also get a “noindex” meta tag, so search engines won’t index them. Visitors can still reach these posts directly via their URL. If a post is assigned to two categories and one of them isn’t private, the post behaves normally: it stays visible on your blog’s homepage and remains indexable.

Because a private category already does everything the next three options do, checking Private Category automatically selects and locks them. Uncheck it if you need to control those settings individually.

Hide From Category Menu: If you don’t want a category to show in your blog’s homepage category menu, check this box to hide it. Keep in mind that anyone with the URL of this category can still view it, and any posts in this category will still be visible on your blog’s homepage.

Remove Posts From Main Blog Page: Any posts you add to this category won’t be shown on your blog homepage unless they are included in another visible category. The category name, however, will show in the category menu on your blog homepage.

Hide From Search Engines: Check this box to add a “noindex” meta tag to the category’s post list. This ensures that the category page itself will not be indexed by crawlers. Note that this does not affect the posts within the category. If you want a post left out of search results, either assign it only to private categories, or check Hide From Crawlers on the post itself in the post editor.

Heading Description: Enter a brief category description here to have it displayed at the top of the category page.

Upload Background Image: You can also add a background image to the header section of your category page. Click on Select Image and upload an image for your category preferably 1200 pixels wide or higher.

After you add all the category details, make sure to save your changes.

Happy blogging!
