Add a DropInBlog Blog to BigCommerce

The DropInBlog app adds a blog to your BigCommerce store and creates a DropInBlog account during the installation. The setup takes a few minutes.

How to Install DropInBlog on BigCommerce

  1. Find the DropInBlog app on the BigCommerce App Marketplace and click Get this app.
  2. Click Install.
  3. Click Confirm. You’ll land on the Posts list in your new DropInBlog account.
  4. Make your blog visible by going to Storefront → Web Pages, then in the Visible column, click the X next to Our Blog so it turns into a checkmark.
You can use DropInBlog for the length of your free trial and choose a plan any time before it ends.

Where Your BigCommerce Blog Lives

Your DropInBlog blog is hosted on DropInBlog’s servers but appears on your own domain. Because BigCommerce’s native blog already uses /blog, DropInBlog creates your blog at your-domain-name/our-blog by default.

If you want your blog at /blog instead, or you’re moving posts over from the native BigCommerce blog, follow the steps in this guide: Migrating your BigCommerce blog to DropInBlog.

What Happens to the Blog I Already Have on BigCommerce

Installing the DropInBlog app doesn’t import posts from your BigCommerce blog, and those posts stay where they are, so until you move them, your store has two blogs. Move them over to DropInBlog by following these steps:

  1. Open the Import/Export page from the left sidebar in your DropInBlog account.
  2. Click the Import Blog Posts button to the right of BigCommerce Blog.
  3. After you get a confirmation that your blog posts have been imported, click the Create Redirects button.

You can check whether all old blog post URLs have been redirected correctly by going to Settings → 301 Redirects in your BigCommerce account.

If you don’t want the posts from your BigCommerce blog to show on your storefront, turn off its visibility by going to Storefront → Blog and turning off the toggle next to Blog Visibility.

Verifying the Integration

To ensure your blog works correctly, publish a test post and check it on your BigCommerce storefront:

  1. Open the DropInBlog app from your BigCommerce admin.
  2. Click the Add Blog Post button to start a new post, add your content, and publish it.
  3. Click the View Post button on the right.
  4. Check that your blog post displays all elements you added from the post editor, including text, links, images, and videos.

One More Step: Turn On the SEO Supercharger

Your blog is live, and Google indexes your posts as they are. Some other crawlers and link previewers only read a page’s raw HTML, though.

Turning on the SEO Supercharger serves your posts as flat static HTML for those too, with clean URLs. It’s included in every DropInBlog plan.

You’ll need a custom domain with DNS at Cloudflare. On BigCommerce, the DNS record must be a CNAME record. Follow the SEO Supercharger guide, which has a BigCommerce section, to set it up.

Styling

When you create a blog on BigCommerce with DropInBlog, your new blog uses fonts and colors from your BigCommerce store. To change these settings, go to the Layout page in your DropInBlog account and adjust the design settings in Design → Design Customizations. For CSS-based edits, you can add your own CSS in Custom CSS, in the Advanced Options section below Design.

Troubleshooting

If your blog isn’t showing up, check these first:

  • Check that your blog is visible. Go to Storefront → Web Pages, find your blog page, and click the X in the Visible column.
  • Check that the blog slug in BigCommerce matches the one in DropInBlog. Go to Storefront → Web Pages, and select Edit next to your DropInBlog blog page. Under Web Page Details, set the slug to match the one in your DropInBlog account, and uncheck the Redirect old URLs to this URL automatically option so that BigCommerce doesn’t redirect visitors away from your new blog URL.

Still not working? Contact DropInBlog support and include a link to your blog page.

Limitations

DropInBlog has the following limits:

  • DropInBlog doesn’t have a tagging system, so the tags on your BigCommerce posts don’t carry over. Solved: organize your posts with DropInBlog categories.
  • You can’t manage your blog content through BigCommerce’s Content API. Solved: manage your content through DropInBlog’s own admin and API.
  • DropInBlog posts aren’t native BigCommerce posts, so they won’t appear in the built-in blog feed, archives, or RSS feed. Solved: DropInBlog has its own categories and RSS feed, located on the Settings page, below Blog URL.
  • BigCommerce’s storefront search can’t search your blog content. Solved: use DropInBlog’s Instant Search, which searches every post.
  • The BigCommerce sitemap won’t list your blog posts. Solved: submit DropInBlog’s automatic sitemap (on the Settings page, below Blog URL) to Google Search Console.
