Add a DropInBlog Blog to Shopify

Installing the DropInBlog app from the Shopify App Store adds a blog to your store in about 5 minutes. It automatically creates your DropInBlog account, and the blog inherits your store’s theme.

How to Install DropInBlog on Shopify

  1. Find the DropInBlog app on Shopify’s App Store.
  2. Install the app. You’ll land on the Posts list in your new DropInBlog account.
  3. Activate the blog extension by clicking the Enable Now button near the top of the page.
  4. Once you’re in the theme editor, make sure the toggle next to DropInBlog Blog is turned on.
  5. Click Save and exit the theme editor.
  6. (Optional) Add the blog link to your store’s navigation menu by going to Content → Menus → Main menu → Add menu item and pasting your blog link into the Search or paste a link field.
You can use DropInBlog for the length of your free trial and choose a plan any time before it ends.

Where Your Shopify Blog Lives

Your blog is hosted on DropInBlog’s servers, but it appears on your own domain through the Shopify app proxy. App proxy addresses start with one of four prefixes: /a, /apps, /community, or /tools. For a page called “blog” that uses the /a prefix, the URL structure looks like this:

yourstore.com/a/blog (blog homepage)

yourstore.com/a/blog/blog-post-title (individual blog posts)

What Happens With the Blog I Already Have on Shopify

Installing the DropInBlog app doesn’t affect the blog you created with Shopify’s built-in blog engine in any way. Its posts stay at their /blogs/ URLs, so until you move them, your store has two blogs. To bring them over to DropInBlog, follow these steps:

  1. In DropInBlog, open the Import/Export page from the left sidebar.
  2. Click the button that shows how many Shopify posts are ready to import. Your posts come over with their meta titles and descriptions.
  3. When prompted, click the Create Redirects button to redirect your old Shopify post URLs to the new posts.

Verifying the Integration

Ensure your blog works as expected by creating a new blog post:

  1. Access the DropInBlog app from the Apps tab in your Shopify account.
  2. Create and publish a new blog post.
  3. View the post and check that the text, images, and links display properly.

Once you publish a new post, you can check whether the blog post URL is included in your sitemap. DropInBlog creates your sitemap automatically. You’ll find it on the Settings page of your DropInBlog account, below Blog URL.

Styling

After you’ve installed the DropInBlog app, your new blog picks up your store’s fonts and colors, so it should look native out of the box. If you want to make some changes, go to Design → Design Customizations on the Layout page of your DropInBlog account. In the Advanced Options section below Design, you’ll find Custom CSS, where you can add your own CSS.

Troubleshooting

If your blog isn’t showing up, check these first:

  • Check that your store is public. While your store is private, visitors without the password can’t see the blog. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, click the access setting, select Public, and click Update.
  • Check that you enabled the DropInBlog app inside the theme editor after installing the app. If you haven’t done that, access the DropInBlog app from Shopify’s Apps menu, and click the Enable Now button near the top of the page.
  • Make sure you’ve saved the changes after enabling the DropInBlog Blog app from within the theme editor. Click the Save button in the top right.
  • Check that DropInBlog has permission to access your Shopify store data. If you haven’t done that, start the installation process again, and when asked, click Install.

If your blog still isn’t working, contact DropInBlog support and include a link to your blog page.

Limitations

DropInBlog integrates closely with Shopify, but there are a few limits that you should keep in mind:

  • DropInBlog doesn’t support tags, so the tags you use on Shopify blog posts don’t carry over. Solved: organize your posts with DropInBlog categories.
  • You can’t use Shopify’s built-in commenting system for your blog. Solved: add comments with DropInBlog’s native Disqus integration, or another commenting system through a Smart Snippet™.
  • Your posts don’t appear in Shopify’s blog pages or its blog feed. Solved: DropInBlog has its own categories and RSS feed, located on the Settings page, below Blog URL.
  • Shopify’s store search won’t find your posts. Solved: use DropInBlog’s Instant Search, which searches every post.
  • Shopify’s sitemap won’t list your posts. Solved: submit DropInBlog’s automatic sitemap to Google Search Console.
  • A third-party app designed to work with the native Shopify blog may not work with DropInBlog.
