Add a DropInBlog Blog to WordPress (Embed)
There are two ways to add a blog to WordPress with DropInBlog. The method explained here (embed) shows you how to add DropInBlog without a plugin. Use it if you can’t install plugins, for example, because your managed hosting provider restricts them. If you can install plugins, use the second method that uses the DropInBlog blog plugin instead.
Setting up a blog with the embed method takes a few minutes. It requires adding a Custom HTML block to a WordPress page, then pasting the two code snippets from DropInBlog into it.
How to Install DropInBlog on WordPress With the Embed Method
- From your WordPress admin, create a new page by going to Pages → Add Page.
- Name your page. Use something descriptive like “Blog” or “News.”
- Add a Custom HTML block to your new page. In the block editor, click the plus sign and choose Custom HTML. In the classic editor, switch to the Text tab.
- Go to the Code & Layout page of your DropInBlog account and click Copy under Blog Script.
- Paste the code inside the Custom HTML block (or the Text tab) in WordPress.
- Return to DropInBlog’s Code & Layout page and click Copy under Blog Container.
- Paste the code inside the Custom HTML block (or the Text tab) in WordPress, after the first line of code.
- Click the Publish button to publish the changes you made on your WordPress site.
- (Optional) Add the page to your menu. If your dashboard shows Appearance → Editor, open Navigation, click the plus icon in the navigation menu, and select your blog page. If it shows Appearance → Menus, select your blog page under Pages, click Add to Menu, then Save Menu.
- Open your new blog page in a new tab and copy its link.
- Return to DropInBlog’s Code & Layout page and click Verify Integration. If asked to add a blog link, paste it inside the blog URL input field, then click Check Integration. A success message tells you the blog is live.
Where Your WordPress Blog Lives
Your posts sit on DropInBlog’s servers and are managed from DropInBlog’s dashboard, but visitors read them on your WordPress domain. If the blog page is called “Blog,” the URL structure of the blog homepage and individual blog posts looks something like this:
your-domain-name/blogyour-domain-name/blog/?p=blog-post-title
The ?p= disappears once you turn on the SEO Supercharger, explained at the end of Verifying the Integration. If you use the plugin setup instead, the SEO Supercharger is built in, and you don’t need to turn anything on.
What About the Blog I Already Have on WordPress
Your existing WordPress posts stay where they are. Adding a blog via the DropInBlog embed method doesn’t change or remove them from your site.
However, you can also move your existing WordPress posts into DropInBlog:
- Export your WordPress posts. If you use the built-in export tool, you’ll have to convert the XML file into CSV.
- Open the Import/Export page in DropInBlog, click the Upload File button under Blog Post CSV, then Map CSV Fields.
- Connect your CSV fields to DropInBlog fields, then click Import.
Verifying the Integration
Upon adding DropInBlog to your WordPress site, check if the integration works by adding a new blog post. Here’s how to do that:
- Go to your DropInBlog account and open the Posts page.
- Click Add Blog Post to open the DropInBlog editor.
- Add your content, then set the post status to Published on the right and click Save Post.
- Click View Post to see if it shows on your WordPress site and displays all post elements correctly.
One More Step: Turn On the SEO Supercharger
A post that shows up correctly means the embed is doing its job, and Google picks up posts loaded this way. Not every crawler or social network runs the code that loads them, though. Some read only the page’s raw HTML.
With the SEO Supercharger on, each post is also served as a flat static HTML page that anything can read. Your post URLs lose the ?p=, pages load faster, and shared links show the right title and image. Every DropInBlog plan includes it.
The SEO Supercharger support doc has the steps.
Styling
DropInBlog picks up the colors and fonts from your WordPress site, so the blog should match your theme without extra work. You can change this on the Code & Layout page of your DropInBlog account. From here, you can:
- Make small design changes by going to Design → Design Customizations.
- Apply your own CSS under Custom CSS, in the Advanced Options section below Design.
- Change the blog layout under Blog Layout, in the same Advanced Options section.
Troubleshooting
If your blog isn’t showing up, check these first:
- Check that the page is published. A draft, or a page you didn’t update after adding the code, won’t show the blog. Click Publish or Save after adding your code.
- Check that you added your DropInBlog blog code to a Custom HTML block instead of the Code block. The Code block displays code as text, so it won’t show your blog. Paste the snippets into the Custom HTML block.
- Make sure you pasted both code snippets from DropInBlog into WordPress. The blog needs both the Blog Script and Blog Container code to work. If one of these is missing, paste it into the Custom HTML block.
- Check that your WordPress user role can save script code. On a regular WordPress site, only Administrators and Editors can add code like this. On a WordPress Multisite network, only Super Admins can. If your role can’t, ask someone with one of those roles to paste the code.
- On WordPress.com, check your plan. Script code only works on plugin-enabled plans with hosting features activated.
If none of this helps, contact DropInBlog support and include a link to your blog page.
Limitations
Because the embed keeps your posts outside WordPress, a few WordPress features don’t reach them:
- Your posts aren’t WordPress posts. They won’t appear in your theme’s blog loop, category and tag archives, or your site’s RSS feed. Anyone subscribed to your WordPress feed won’t see them. Solved: DropInBlog has its own categories and RSS feed. Find the feed in Settings, below Blog URL.
- WordPress search won’t find DropInBlog posts. Site search queries your WordPress database, and your posts aren’t in it. Solved: DropInBlog’s Instant Search searches every post on your blog.
- SEO plugins won’t manage them. Yoast, Rank Math, and similar plugins work on WordPress content. To them, your whole blog is a single page. Solved: set per-post titles and meta descriptions in DropInBlog instead.
- WordPress comments won’t work per post. Comments attach to the page holding the embed, not to individual posts. Solved: turn on DropInBlog’s native Disqus integration, or add another commenting system with a Smart Snippet™.
- WordPress sitemaps won’t list your posts. Solved: DropInBlog creates a separate sitemap for your blog. Submit it to Google Search Console.
