Add a DropInBlog Blog to WordPress (Plugin)
The DropInBlog plugin connects your WordPress site to your DropInBlog account and serves your posts as part of your site, with clean URLs and server rendering. When you activate the plugin, it creates the blog page for you, so there’s no code to paste.
How to Install DropInBlog on WordPress With the Plugin
- In your WordPress admin, hover over Plugins and click Add Plugin.
- Find the DropInBlog plugin and click the Install Now button.
- Once you’ve installed the plugin, click Activate.
- In the left-hand side menu of the WordPress admin, find and hover over DropInBlog, then select Settings.
- On the following page, you’ll see the Public API Key field. To get a key, go to the Code & Layout page of your DropInBlog account and click Generate API Key.
- Set the key’s visibility to public and copy it.
- Return to WordPress and paste the API key into the Public API Key field.
- Select the page where you want the blog to appear using the dropdown menu next to Assigned Page.
- Click Continue to connect DropInBlog to WordPress.
- Select your blog from the dropdown next to Connected Blog and click Save Changes.
- Access DropInBlog from your WordPress admin by going to DropInBlog → Manage Posts, then open the Code & Layout page.
- Click Verify Integration, and if asked, paste the link to your blog page and click Check Integration. You’ll get a message that your blog is live.
Where Your WordPress Blog Lives
DropInBlog keeps your posts on its own servers, and the plugin displays them on your WordPress domain, on the page you assigned. The plugin turns on DropInBlog’s SEO Supercharger automatically, so your posts get clean URLs with no extra setup. The blog homepage and individual blog posts have the following format:
your-domain-name/blogyour-domain-name/blog/blog-post-title
WordPress doesn’t always add new pages to your menu. If your blog page isn’t there, add it under Appearance → Editor → Navigation if your theme is a block theme, or Appearance → Menus if it’s a classic theme.
What About the Blog I Already Have on WordPress
Your existing WordPress posts stay where they are, so until you move them, your site has two blogs. To copy them into DropInBlog, use the DropInBlog Import plugin:
- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add Plugin, search for “DropInBlog Import,” and install and activate it.
- Go to DropInBlog → Import Posts and click the link under the Private API Key box. You’ll be taken to DropInBlog’s API creation page.
- Name the API key, set the access type to private, and click Create API Key.
- Copy the API key, then return to WordPress, paste the key into the Private API Key box, and click Continue.
- Select the DropInBlog blog you want to import your WordPress blog posts into, and the post statuses you want to import. Published posts are selected by default.
- Click Save Changes → Import Posts to DropInBlog → Import to finalize the import process.
The import copies each post’s title, content, slug, excerpt, date, author, categories, and featured image, and it doesn’t change your WordPress posts. It covers posts only, not pages. Run it once, since each run creates new copies. After you import your posts, redirect the old post URLs to their new ones, for example, with a redirect plugin.
Verifying the Integration
To test the integration, create a new blog post in DropInBlog:
- Open the Posts page.
- Click Add Blog Post.
- Add your content inside the editor.
- Select Published under Status and click Save Post.
- Click the View Post button and check that all of its elements display correctly.
Styling
Blogs created with DropInBlog adopt the design of the website they’re added to, so your blog should look at home in your WordPress theme from the start.
On the Code & Layout page of your DropInBlog account, under Design → Design Customizations, you’ll find the inherited styles from your WordPress site. Use the dropdowns to adjust these settings.
If you want to make CSS-based changes, add your CSS under Custom CSS, in the Advanced Options section below Design.
Troubleshooting
If your blog isn’t showing up, check these first:
- Check your WordPress and PHP versions. The plugin needs WordPress 6.0 or higher and PHP 8.0 or higher. Update WordPress, or ask your host to update PHP.
- Make sure the plugin is active. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins, and see if DropInBlog is listed under the Active tab.
- Check that you installed the right plugin. DropInBlog Import only moves posts and doesn’t show a blog. Install and activate the DropInBlog plugin.
- Check the assigned page. The blog only appears on the page you chose. Go to DropInBlog → Settings and select the right page under Assigned Page.
- Check your API key. A wrong or deleted key stops the blog from loading. Create a new key in DropInBlog and, from your WordPress admin, paste it into DropInBlog → Settings.
- On WordPress.com, check your plan. Plugins only run on plugin-enabled plans with hosting features activated.
Still not working? Contact DropInBlog support and include a link to your blog page.
Limitations
The plugin shows your posts inside WordPress, but they aren’t stored there, so a few WordPress features don’t apply to them:
- Your posts aren’t WordPress posts. They live on the page you assigned, so they don’t appear in your theme’s post lists, category and tag archives, or your WordPress RSS feed. Solved: DropInBlog has its own categories and RSS feed. Find the feed in Settings, below Blog URL.
- WordPress search won’t find them. Site search queries your WordPress database, and your posts aren’t in it. Solved: DropInBlog’s Instant Search helps visitors browse every post on your blog.
- SEO plugins like Yoast and Rank Math can’t edit your posts’ titles and meta descriptions. Solved: set each post’s SEO title and meta description in the SEO Analysis section below the post editor in DropInBlog.
- WordPress comments can’t attach to individual posts. Solved: connect DropInBlog with a commenting system like Disqus.
- WordPress sitemaps won’t list your posts. Solved: DropInBlog creates a separate sitemap for your blog (in Settings, below Blog URL). Submit it to Google Search Console.
